Spring 2019 Commencement – Message from the President

Spring 2019 Commencement – Message from the President

20th May 2019

Dear University community,

This week will be a hugely exciting one for us as we collectively celebrate and honour the hard work, sacrifice and perseverance of our graduands. Commencement epitomizes our efforts as a higher education institution and represents our most sacred traditions. There is nothing quite like witnessing the exuberance that candidates for graduation radiate and being inspired by the pride of parents, guardians and family members display.

Once again, we are marking the completion of one chapter for graduating students, whom we have educated, advised, mentored, guided and encouraged. We look forward to the journey on which they will embark – grounded in the life lessons they have learnt at UB – to become adept global citizens. In as much as this period is a moment to celebrate, it is also a time for faculty, staff, and administrators to reaffirm our commitment to serve with distinction and continue to build a strong university. Ours is an awesome responsibility and our best effort is required to achieve our mission.

The 2019 Commencement Class comprises more than 600 persons; hundreds of individuals with myriad competencies who will help to make our Bahamaland and the world more resilient. They will add to our more than 18,000 alumni. Within our commencement class are mothers, fathers, champions, student-athletes, entrepreneurs and persons who simply refused to give up on their dreams of making better lives for themselves. There is no denying it; a university education transforms lives, families, communities and nations for the better. This is why we must not rest on our laurels.

For those of you who can, I invite you to attend as many of this week’s Spring 2019 Commencement events as you can and the Commencement ceremony in particular. Take lots of photos with our graduands and use the hashtags (CommencementIsComing #UBLeadersForLife #UBProud #UBAlumni #UBClassOf2019) when you post them to social media. Spread the excitement. Let’s show our soon-to-be graduates how much we support them, believe in them and honour them.
